Caroll Lynn's Guide To Summer Trainers

The first and last word in the world of girl-sneakerheads is: careaux. The sneakerhead community online is well documented – oversaturated even. With more new drops, collabs and exclusives than you can shake a Supreme T-shirt at, there's one lady kicking through the din on her Instagram: Caroll Lynn AKA Careux. She's amassed an incredible fanbase (see her 58.1K followers) on account of her in-depth knowledge on all things trainer-related – but she's also worth a good fan-girling even if you're not that into sneakers.

Why? Well, her Instagram feed looks like a Farrow & Ball sample: pale-pinks, camels and soft greys. Pair with that her acid-pink hair (it changes colour, a lot) and her deeply do-able, sporty-girl-next-door style, and you've got yourself a double tap.

Ahead, we chat to Caroll about her latest Puma collaboration – yup, she's just designed a line of trainers with the sports megalith that perfectly blends her illustrations (pink geometric prisms, creatures and blossoms) with the brand's iconic shoe-shapes. Like ice-cream sundaes for your feet, kinda.

Without further ado, over to Caroll, and her guide to wearing trainers well...

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

My name is Caroll Lynn van den Brom, born and raised in the Netherlands. I'm an artist, an illustrator and now a sneaker designer being the women’s footwear designer at Amsterdam-based luxe sneaker brand Filling Pieces.

My current home-base is Amsterdam due to my stint at Filling Pieces but I also spend some time at home in Sydney, where I take some time off designing. I work every day of the week and I really enjoy what I do. On weekends I like to hang out with my girl friends, catch up on sleep and just get inspired by design which is very palpable in the city.

How did the PUMA collab come about?

I've always been connected with PUMA, I’ve been an avid fan of the brand, and then they contacted me to see if I was interested in designing a range with them. Of course, who would say no!

Who would you love to see in the trainers and why?

I’d love to see them on people I respect within the sneakerhead community.

How would you describe your style?

I would say it's equal parts girly and "street". It can start with a cozy pair of sneakers and I work my outfit around that. I also love pastel and neutral shades of pink.

What are you wearing these days?

I’m currently in Amsterdam and it's the summer so these days I’m usually in a two-piece number or jumpsuit with bright trainers.

How do you store your sneakers?

I like my trainers to always look fresh, so I keep them arranged in my trainer wardrobe at home.

Can we talk about your hair...

Hair says a lot about someone’s style and personality. I love pink and always work in pink shades, so having my hair in pink was a natural choice.

How do you maintain the colour?

I go to the salon at least once every three weeks to get some moisture treatment and top up the colour if needed.

What's the best pair of summer trainers and why?

I love a trainer with a colour accent; it’s as colourful as I get in my outfits which are usually black, white and grey. So a simple look with some eye-popping trainers does the trick.

If you're not wearing trainers what are you wearing?

My furry PUMA sliders in white or pink, I love them because they’re #shecozy of course.

What looks best with sneakers?

They can be worn in so many different ways. Another reason I love them. I would team them with a two piece outfit like a crop and shorts/skirt. Anything girlie.

What's your favourite pair of trainers ever?

I can't say I have a favourite 'cause I feel they're all unique.

What do you love about trainers?

They’re just super cozy. I like that you can create your own unique style just by your choice of sneakers. I’m the kind who doesn’t follow trends, just style that I’m drawn to.

How many do you have?

I don’t even know the answer to that, but it’s in the hundreds. They’re also in different locations as I move a lot, but I travel with a few of my faves.

Who's your trainer style icon?

I don't really have someone I look up to but I reckon some girls have good style. So far I only follow one girl on Instagram for her clothes and hair and that's Tsutsumi Hoang.

Are you particular about keeping them clean?

Even when I look or feel like shit, I like that my trainers don’t. So I like them to be fresh and clean and looking their best. I use the simplest of cleaning methods and a lot of TLC.
