When it comes to awards shows, the Grammys and its go-big-or-go-home mentality have given us some of music's most outrageous (and barely-there) looks over the years. Much like the sidewalks of Fashion Month (which is currently in full swing, er, swish), the Grammys are a chance for our favorite artists to peacock their songbird hearts out. And this year, much like the rest, lived up to expectations.

Where some stayed true to their stage wardrobes (i.e. Taylor Swift and her hypothetical belly button, and Selena re: sequins), others threw caution to the wind and got us talking. Ahead, you'll find the breakout style moments of the night. Let's just say, when it comes to delivering the unexpected, this is the awards show where people aren't messing around.

Selena Gomez may be sick of that same old love, but we're not sick of the same old glittery gowns she tends to gravitate toward. The singer hit the red carpet with BFF Taylor Swift, wearing a blue, cutout midriff dress by Calvin Klein.

Ellie Goulding has some crazy red carpet moments under her belt (for proof, see here), so we appreciate her simpler pink Stella McCartney shift. That, and the fact that she was dripping in diamonds. You go, girl.

New music, new outlook, new...aesthetic? Adele went for a more understated look this time around, and it seriously paid off. Who wouldn't wear that black Givenchy dress?

Leave it to Gaga to fully embrace her David Bowie tribute — with a tattoo of the late, great singer on her midsection, and a bold, printed, glittery, all-around amazing jacket-dress worthy of the Starman.

Tove Lo's Grammys look was inspired by Givenchy's fall 2015 collection, right?

Ciara's getup isn't so much a dress as it is an artfully wrapped piece of fabric, but we give her props for having the confidence to show so. Much. Skin. We can only assume that a lot of double-sided tape was required to put this look together (literally).

Bella Hadid may have skipped out on New York Fashion Week to attend the awards show with her beau, The Weeknd, but she didn't treat the red carpet any differently than she would a runway. Her dress, with its extremely deep V and thigh-high slit, served up a hefty dose of sex appeal.

First the fall magazine covers, now the Grammys. Is there anywhere this Gucci dress won't go? No matter where it ends up, we like it right here on Florence Welch.

A simple black suit can be very mother of the bride (especially one with shoulder pads), but Demi Lovato relied on some serious bling to edge things up a notch.

We saw cape dresses dominate the Golden Globes red carpet, and (a very pregnant) Chrissy Teigen brought the trend to the Grammys with a stunning white version.

If Taylor Swift's crop top and maxi-skirt ensemble (obviously) from Versace looks familiar, just remind yourself of Emma Stone's Thakoon number from the 2014 Met Gala. (Or the prom dress from 10 Things I Hate About You.)

Zendaya in a suit isn't surprising, but she still makes us swoon each time she opts for a menswear-inspired look (including this DSquared2 set). Let's just hope her Carol Brady mullet is a heatfelt tribute to David Bowie, and not an everyday kind of hairstyle.
