@pieraluisa It's hard, sitting on your Ikea bed and sheets you bought when you packed off for University, scrolling Instagram and getting that twinge of self-hate that everyone else has such nice houses. Whether it's a snap of your #shelfie or box-fresh kicks, there's only so much you can hide with a Valencia filter and a touch of brightness.
So, we've picked up eight easy tips from Instagram to up your home decor game and, subsequently, your Insta feed. We've tried to keep it achievable and inexpensive, so ditch the scrolling and seize the day for a spot of decorating – just in time for #brunch.
Cut The Crap
Instead of cluttering your bedside with hand cream and hairclips on the loose, use a shoebox or linen bag to store your trinkets, and organise the surface with vessels to keep everything tidy. Fresh foliage never goes amiss, and also makes for the perfect instagram still life.
@brittanybathgate Co-ordinate Your Colours
Our Editor-In-Chief Christene Barberich hashtagged her renovation with #thebaxterproject, and the bedroom isn't short of genius. Dark walls are a bold move, but offset these with lighter floors and a tight colour scheme, and you're well on your way to picture-perfect.
@christenebarberich It's All In The Details
Tiles, textures, taps. These details are key to that perfect background for your pedicure. Metro tiles have been a bit exhausted in the world of Pinterest, so go for square tiles instead for a bit of pleasing geometry.
@hollyliss Artwork Is Key
Empty walls are most definitely sad walls. Invest in some artwork that matches your taste. Either a bit of DIY when payday is a mere memory, or you can find great artwork like this piece at Society6 . You'd be surprised what can come from just contacting photographers and illustrators you like online. Palm optional.
@thematfinish Curate The Bookshelf
Books are a great way to make clutter look curated. Play around with your shelving solutions and mix in some artwork, plants and keepsakes. Experiment with shelving books horizontally and vertically to avoid it looking static.
@ohladycakes The Modern Ornament
Perfect to adorn your new piles of books, ceramics are the new interior hype since "Keep Calm And Carry On" prints – but 100x cooler. These terracotta pots by Brooklyn-based Group Partner are handmade and just a snip at £45.
@pieraluisa Tape It Up
Got some wall space in need of a quick change up? Take some time to hang all the postcards you've bought at galleries, black tape looks particularly chic. London Graphic Centre do good coloured tapes which make for an inexpensive feature wall.
@emilycocklin Surface Study
A good backdrop is essential for the perfect Instagram pic. This marble looks great and a 20cm plate can be picked up at SCP for just £15 . Place it by the window for optimum light for that #flatlay.
Also perfect as a modern cheese board or cake platter.
