As the last of the SS16 ads are unveiled and we stop beginning our emails with "Happy New Year," we’re spending much time discussing our most-loved spreads of the season. From Balmain’s revival of the “supers” – Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer – who don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day, and Moschino’s car wash extravaganza starring Lexi Boling, Joan Smalls and Fei Fei Sun, to Alessandro Michele’s eccentric 70s-driven Gucci party in Berlin, the latest collections have given us much to get excited about.
But when it comes to the season's standout, it’s Balenciaga. Likely to be Alexander Wang’s last ever campaign for the house (cry), it features both his muse Anna Ewers, and his BFF Zoe Kravitz – the latter of whom was one of five actresses to walk in his last ever runway show. Of course, Wang’s not the only designer to cast an actress as the star of a fashion campaign. Here, we chart ten of the best.
Imogen Poots: Miu Miu
It’s no secret that Miu Miu have a soft spot for actresses. While the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Elle Fanning have previously graced their campaigns, Miu Miu enlisted Brit-babe Imogen Poots for SS15 wearing a red leather jacket that wouldn’t have looked out of place on Lula Pace Fortune in Wild at Heart . With a lead role in punk-rock horror film, Green Room, alongside rising actor Callum Turner on the cards for 2016, it’s safe to say you’ll be seeing a lot more of Poots this year.
Gwendoline Christie: Vivienne Westwood
As if killer roles in Game of Thrones , Hunger Games and Star Wars weren’t enough, Gwendoline Christie bagged herself a lead in Vivienne Westwood’s AW15 campaign too, shot by none other than Juergen Teller. “In this collection the same suit can be worn by a man and a woman – then I realised Gwendoline would be perfect and would fit the clothes so I asked her to do it. She is such an attractive woman,” Westwood told Vanity Fair .
Stacy Martin: Miu Miu
Nymphomaniac -actress-turned-campaign-girl Stacy Martin has appeared in three Miu Miu ads, the most recent of which was for their first ever fragrance in September 2015. Co-starring alongside a black and white kitten named Truman, the Steven Meisel-lensed shoot stands as a firm reminder of Miu Miu’s 20-year strong support of fearless, young, rising talents.
Emilia Clarke: Dior Jewellery
Following in the footsteps of Gwendoline Christie, fellow GoT star Emilia Clarke found herself fronting a Dior campaign, as the face of their Rose des Vents fine jewellery collection back in November 2015. Looking ever the English rose with natural hair and classic Dior rouge lips, Clarke is the first non-model to represent the Rose des Vents line.
Klara Kristin: Saint Laurent
Following her lead role in boundary pushing director Gaspar Noé’s squirm-worthy, sexually-charged melodrama LOVE , 22 year old Copenhagen-born actress Klara Kristin bagged herself a slot in Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent “Surf Sound” resort campaign. Starring alongside fellow actor Jack Kilmer, the pair also walked in the Saint Laurent SS16 menswear show.
Jessica Lange: Marc Jacobs
When Marc Jacobs calls you up to star in a beauty campaign shot by David Sims at the age of 64, you know you’ve got a good thing going on. Jessica Lange has exactly that. Having provided the haunting spoken-word voiceover for Jacobs’ AW14 show, his obsession with the award winning actress –renowned for her roles in King Kong , Blue Sky and most recently, American Horror Story – landed her the lead in the first ever Marc Jacobs beauty campaign.
Julie Waters: Burberry
Having re-created the opening scene of Billy Elliot for their 2015 Christmas campaign, it seemed only right that Burberry called upon legendary British actress Julie Walters to star in the festive vid alongside Romeo Beckham, James Corden, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Sir Elton John.
Hailee Steinfeld: Miu Miu
Miu Miu’s AW11 campaign kicked up more of a fuss than expected. Featuring a then 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld sat on a railway track, the Advertising Standards Agency accused the brand of being “irresponsible” for "showing a child in a hazardous or dangerous situation". Nominated that year for the Oscars Best Supporting Actress award for her role in True Grit , Steinfeld has since transitioned from actress to successful pop siren.
Jennifer Lawrence: Dior
Following the lead of Rihanna and Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Lawrence has proven herself a Dior favourite having featured in both their beauty and accessories campaigns since 2013. We’re pretty sure that means she has the Dior atelier on speed-dial for any worthy occasion; who could forget the Oscars incident when J-Law tripped up the stairs in Dior couture? Prompting many a spoof Dior ad, the actress who was on her way to collect her Best Actress award laughed the incident off, making the whole world love her that little bit more.
Mia Goth: Miu Miu
Now, it’s not the first time Miu Miu have come under scrutiny from the ASA. Mia Goth’s role alongside Poots in their SS15 campaign was deemed "likely to cause serious offence", leading them to ban the advert in its entirety on the grounds that it presented a “child” (read: 22 year old girl) “in a sexualised way.” Surprising news, considering the fact that Goth is best known for starring in a film called Nymphomaniac , for which the poster presented her mid-orgasm. Of course, Miu Miu couldn’t stay away from the rising beauty, casting her a second time in their AW16 “Subjective Reality” campaign.
