The black feline flick is the LBD of the makeup world – it goes with anything and works for every occasion. But just like the LBD, sometimes there'll be an event that requires something a little different, or maybe after years of applying it like clockwork every morning, it might be time to try something new.
Luckily, changing the way you do your eyeliner is an easy instant beauty update – no art degree or steady hand required. Here's some inspiration to help you get started.

If anyone knows how to nail eyeliner it's Sam Chapman, one half of beauty guru duo Pixiwoo. Intensify your look by thickening your kohl line both under the eye and higher up on the lid for a bolder look.

Red eyeliner is a scary thought but do it right (i.e. delicate and subtle) and it's the perfect accent to bare lids and fluttery lashes. Makeup artist Ida Ekman has managed to turn eyeliner itself into a work of art.

Keep the flick small and close to the lash line but add a simple dot at the inner corner of the eye for a fresh touch, like blogger and YouTuber Charlotte Hole. Add nude lips for understated chic.

Look to the '90s and opt for a blue flick like Erica Bowes, cofounder and creative director of magazine Sukeban. Add blue mascara to the ends of the lashes for the beauty equivalent of double denim.

If you're not ready to let go of the classic flick entirely, take a hint from Glossier and opt for grey kohl for a softer take that gives a smokier effect.

Kathryn Hewitson (who you might recognise from Ashley Williams' SS17 show) knows that double eyeliner and a teeny dot in the corner of the eye always trumps a single flick. OTT jewelled accessories optional but encouraged.

Take inspiration from Abigail Bergstrom and place a simple dot in the centre of the lower lash line for a doll-eyed effect.

Eyeliner doesn't have to stop at the socket. Do as Sophie Hannah Richardson does and add a few strokes of embellishment just above the cheekbone.

Follow our lead (read our story on party makeup ideas here) and opt for a graphic liner in aubergine – or something brighter, if you're bold enough.
