Remember that moment in 13 Going on 30 when Jennifer Garner's character, Jenna Rink, throws on a makeshift headband crafted from a simple piece of pink ribbon? Well, I don't know about you, but I definitely emulated that look for the remainder of 2004.

Looking back over a decade later, I realise there are tons of styling tips, tricks, and suggestions that I — and most likely countless others — have pulled from the movies we know and love: things like the colours we should (and shouldn't) wear (thank you, Elle Woods); the notion that all-black everything is, well, everything; and that dressing for yourself is the true meaning of fashion.

Ahead, we've rounded up 15 sartorial lessons we learned from the silver screen. Click through for a hefty dose of style (and nostalgia), and feel free to share your go-tos in the comments below.

10 Things I Hate About You, 1999

Always think about whether you merely like or actually love something before you dish out the money for it.

The Addams Family, 1965

Most might credit Kanye West with the all-black errrrything craze, but it was actually Morticia Addams who first recognised that a dark wardrobe is a happy one.

Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? 1966

If you work in the fashion industry, you're more than aware of its excesses, and the 1966 hit, Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? is here to remind us that, like war, it always will be.

Sex and the City, 2008

Samantha Jones said it best: Age is but a number.

The Seven Year Itch, 1955

Don't knock it until you try The Girl (played by Marilyn Monroe)'s suggestion. It might be the sweaty summer saviour you've been waiting for.

Legally Blonde, 2001

This one-liner says it all: Orange will never replace the colour pink, and we should never, ever think to buy a "truly heinous angora sweater."

Roman Holiday, 1953

Princess Ann hated nightgowns and underwear, reminding us that what you wear to bed should make you feel just as good as any other item of clothing.

The Blind Side, 2009

Leave it to Sandra Bullock to offer up style advice that's self-explanatory.

Grey Gardens, 1975

"This is the best thing to wear for today, you understand," Little Edie said. "Because I don't like women in skirts, and the best thing is to wear pantyhose or some pants under a short skirt, I think. Then you have the pants under the skirt and then you can pull the stockings up over the pants underneath the skirt. And you can always take off the skirt and use it as a cape." That's what we call styling advice at its finest.

Working Girl, 1988

A friendly reminder from Working Girl: Don't pay for overpriced goods, regardless of how awesome you think they are. Particularly pleather.

The Virgin Suicides, 1999

Sofia Coppola’s seminal debut film transported us into her teenage, nostalgic, dreamlike aesthetic, leaving a lasting impression on the fashion industry and our wardrobes. Tavi Gevinson is a self-confessed fan of the film's dreamy vibes, and religiously reads the book and watches the film each year.

Sofia Coppola collaborated with costume designer Nancy Steiner to create the authentic 70s looks worn by the effortlessly stylish sisters, and numerous designers, from Marc Jacobs to Rodarte have taken inspiration from this iconic flick.

The Devil Wears Prada, 2006

As spring 2016 approaches perhaps it's time to try something new? Say goodbye to flower power.

To Catch A Thief, 1955

A boy in a Breton? It's a yes from us. Especially if he looks like Carey Grant.

Clueless, 1995

Don't date someone with a better sense of style than your own. Cheers to Cher Horowitz for her countless words of wardrobe wisdom that truly stand the test of time.
