'Tis almost the season of chapped lips, dry hair, flaky skin and sick-day-inducing flu. Woohoo! Yes, it's already pretty chilly but full-blown winter is looming. At least this means we can give our wardrobes a much-needed update. We all have a neck, and when the temperature plummets, we all need a scarf. Or several, if you're like us. Keeping your neck warm can prevent a cold, right? So not having a scarf selection is basically a health risk.

Scarves may come in only one shape and size, but new styles and trends emerge every winter. The right scarf can bring an otherwise dodgy outfit together and a bad one can draw attention away from your #onfleek ootd.

Here's our pick of the best scarves to wear this winter.

It's a fact. You can't go wrong with black, and this versatile, oversized number will keep you as snug as a bug all winter. It's not cheap, granted, but just think about how many wears you'll get out of it. Want.

Acne Studios Hana Wool-Blend Scarf, £290

With faux fur on one side and smooth satin on the other, this midnight-blue and white striped scarf could be your own little corner of luxury in the cold depths of winter.

J. Crew Mariner Faux Fur Scarf, £150

Stripes never go out of style and this affordable scarf from Zara would look great paired with a tailored pea coat or a less formal leather jacket. Win win.

Zara Shine And Stripes Scarf, £17.99

Yes, you could probably buy a knock-off version at the market for a fiver. But would it be anywhere near as silky-soft as this 100% cashmere beauty? The answer is no. Not even close.

Burberry Checked Cashmere Scarf, £335

A variation of one of our favourite shades, rose quartz, this pom pom scarf will add some much-needed fun to our winter wardrobes which – let's face it – can often be pretty drab. (The pom poms are faux and detachable, so won't get caught in the washing machine. Phew.)

Amelia Jane London Candy Pink Scarf with Brown Faux Fur Pom Poms, £40

This long, poppy-red beauty may cost a small fortune, but if you want a scarf that'll make leaving for work on a dark, freezing morning seem a less arduous affair, this is it.

Isabel Marant Carlyn Fringed Cashmere Scarf, £370

If you're looking for faux fur, you can't go wrong with Shrimps. Transform down-day denim with this colourful tiger print.

Shrimps Margaux Scarf in teal, £195

If this huge, navy-blue tassel scarf was more expensive, we'd call it an "investment piece". Luckily, it's less than £30 and for the assurance of winter-long warmth, that sounds like a bargain to us.

Topshop Knit Tassel Wrap Scarf, £28

Brown is underrated if you ask us. Styled with an oversized black coat, tailored trousers and white trainers, this long scarf is the epitome of laid-back chic.

Asos Supersoft Long Woven Scarf, £12

Frayed edges and oversized designs are both hot this winter. This comfy woollen scarf combines the two. Paired with a cosy roll-neck jumper, you won't even want to go back inside.

Whistles Modern Check Blanket Scarf, £85

The monochrome. The herringbone pattern. The cream fringed edges. Everything about this huuuge scarf (apparently it can be worn as an 'alternative to a jacket'!) screams "timeless". Pricey, maybe, but arguably worth it.

Isabel Marant Étoile Alena Herringbone Wool and Cashmere-Blend Scarf, £180
