June is all about the opening of the new Tate Modern, happening mid-month. The new space, according to Tate, will be "ten-storeys on top of The Tanks , which are the world’s first gallery spaces dedicated to live art, film and installations."
Elsewhere this month, the Art Car Boot Fair takes place on Brick Lane, with artists like Tracey Emin selling small, affordable works, and the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery opens to the public.

Mary Heilmann
Whitechapel – 8th June to 21st of August
Heilmenn's work meshes together all the best things about '60s American counterculture; oceanic hues, psychedelia and beautiful lyricism. The other good news is that Heilmann will be speaking about the show at the gallery on 9th June .

Dulwich Picture Gallery – 8th June to the 18th of September
Slade School alumna Knights was inspired by Italian Renaissance artists, reimagining their work into intricate paintings of her own. Tickets are £12.50 for adults, but worth it to see the first retrospective of such a talented and yet under appreciated female, British artist's work.

Brick Lane – 12th June
Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk and Polly Morgan are just some of the artists that take part in this fair on Brick Lane, which flogs originals alongside artisan designs. It's the perfect place to spend a sunny day browsing the work of up and coming artists, as well as more established names.

Tate Modern – opens 17th June
Ribbon cut – so to speak – on 17th June, the new Tate space will be ten storeys of galleries. The new building reportedly cost a hefty £260m. Designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron,"the façade uses brick to match the surface of the existing museum, while creating something radically new – a perforated brick lattice through which the interior lights glow in the evening."
The opening kicks off with a show of the late French-American artist Louise Bourgeois' works on paper , and a new series of performances in the atmospheric Tanks.

Old photos of Debbie Harry, a gig by the Raincoats, and a social, D-I-Y spirit... what's not to like about the Photographers' Gallery mini punk festival? Expect work by Derek Ridgers alongside Anita Corbin's portraits.
