If there's one thing this Brexit referendum has succeeded in doing, it's reminding us just how diverse Europe actually is. From the landscapes, to the cultures, to the food, Europe boasts some of the most beautiful scenery and experiences on earth – all just a budget airline away.

Today, Lonely Planet announced their Best in Europe 2016 top 10, highlighting the destinations that they think should be on holidaymakers' radars this summer. From hotspot destinations that have a buzz right now, to overlooked spots poised to be the next big thing, to timeless favourites, this list has been compiled by Lonely Planet experts – and they should know. Click through to see which places made the cut.

1. Peloponnese, Greece

The top European destination this summer is this southern peninsula of Greece chosen because it is "an affordable enclave of magnificent ancient sights such as Olympia, Mycenae and Mystras, as well as offering travellers the chance to hike the new Menalon trail." Who needs the Acropolis? Great wine too, apparently.
