Each year, the Cannes Film Festival sneaks up on us in our post-Met Gala haze, providing yet another reason to praise the best fashion of the season. Between the models, celebrities, and cinema folk, it makes for a lot of dresses to be documented. This year's offering of ready-to-wear, couture, and the like (all while being worn beachside) didn't disappoint.
In the slideshow ahead, we'll be keeping you up to date on our favourite looks from this year's festival until the very. Last. Photo call. Where some played it safe (which isn't a bad thing), others took black tie to another dimension. Because some Armani Privé and a casual Valentino are exactly what you'd wear to celebrate this year's upcoming achievements in film? Oh, the life...

Bella Hadid
The Art Deco vibes on this Roberto Cavalli gown have Bella Hadid practically swimming in Swarovski crystals. We're here for every single one.

Céline Sallette
First off, if you haven't seen Rust and Bone, go now. Second, writer-actress Céline Salette in Dior haute couture is a rêve en vert. Check out the pomp of that skirt.

Victoria Beckham
Every time we see Posh Spice on the red carpet (or anywhere, really), we can't help but slow-clap. Here, she's still Posh in one of her own creations from her fall 2016 namesake line (and not that little Gucci dress).

Araya Hargate
Thai actress Araya Hargate just sent all of the pretty-in-pink loyalists packing with this Ralph & Russo gown. For those who thought ruffles were on the outs, think again.

Emilia Schüle
We're conflicted. The corset on this dress is making us want to suit up and slay the carpet, but the train is telling us to find our chill. What to do, what to do...

Caroline de Maigret
Being basically the poster woman of French style means you can pretty much wear anything you want, so Caroline de Maigret, you win with this loose-fitting black dress (and those Chanel shoes, duh).

Tanya Dyagileva
We're getting some major mermaid vibes from this Georges Hobeika gown on model Tanya Dyagileva. That is, if Ariel were decide to finally come out of the water and magically land on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.

Doutzen Kroes
Designer Brandon Maxwell is killing it right now. Last week, Karlie Kloss, and now, Doutzen Kroes. But hey, we're not surprised. Clock that tailored-to-perfection draping.

Kirsten Dunst
You really can't go wrong with Gucci. This floral number on Kirsten Dunst proves just that. And by the way, that sequin bow is an illusion — it's completely 2-D.

Jessica Chastain
When walking the red carpet in France, canary yellow can sometimes give onlookers unwanted ketchup-and-mustard imagery. But all we see here is an Armani Privé dress tailored and draped to perfection.

Lily Donaldson
At this point, it's common knowledge that an LBD is perfect for any occasion, but let model Lily Donaldson remind you that the long-BD is just as good. We wouldn't mind copping this Saint Laurent one for ourselves.

Calm, cool, Stella McCartney. Good choice, Anna.

Vanessa Paradis
Head-to-toe neon lace may not have been the first thing that came to your mind, but we're glad French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis chose the bolder route in this sheer Chanel gown.

Alice Taglioni
French actress Alice Taglioni makes us want to go somewhere tropical in this Giambattista Valli number. Perhaps the South of France?

Naomi Watts
It's been a while since we've seen lavender on the red carpet. And we're glad Armani Privé made us fall in love with it all over again. Killed it, Naomi.

Susan Sarandon
If there's anything we love more than women in suits, it's Susan Sarandon in a suit. This kick-ass Le Smoking by Saint Laurent has us dreaming of YSL's French Riviera days... le sigh.

Julianne Moore
Every time Julianne Moore steps onto the red carpet in Givenchy haute couture, somewhere in the world, a stylist's heart is set aflutter. And today, so is ours.

Gong Li
Chinese actress Gong Li shines in this ethereal, almost fairytale-inducing Roberto Cavalli gown. We sort of imagine (hope) Cinderella will consider this for our imaginary sequel where she gets even more revenge on her evil step-family.

Kristen Stewart
Look, we know what you're thinking: the Kristen Stewart in Chanel fatigue is setting in. But come on, who doesn't want to see a talented actress in Chanel, like, all the time?
