Chunky boots are an item of apparel we much look forward to snuggling back into when we head into colder months, being great with denim, better with tights and ideal paired with a chunky sock. However, if there's one lesson we learnt from the Met Ball last week, it's that a chunky boot really does look excellent with a bare leg.
The boots, largely courtesy of Louis Vuitton, were sported by our favourite red-carpet rule breakers including Selena Gomez and Alicia Vikander. Fierce, platform, pitch black and patent, these boots are made for walking and somehow perfectly complement a dainty dress or a floaty skirt. We couldn't be happier to usher in an alternative to sandals, and we're always down for a wearable heel. Plus, these bad boys will still be your friend come autumn. Win, win, we say.
Here's the most bad-ass boots to invest in now and not take off until next year.

On the foot of every fashion girl this year is some Gucci – and with good reason as these Sgt Peppers will stand the test of time. Wear with a floaty skirt and shirt and you've covered smart-casual in hot weather.

Snakeskin ruled the catwalks for SS16. Make like the Hadids and pair with bleached-out jeans.

A cult classic, these modern cowgirl boots will toughen up the most kawaii of summer frocks.

These metallic beauties will look super with a bare leg and just as sparkling with your winter wardrobe. Plus if ever you could run in heels, it would be these.

Patent, mulberry boots shouldn't work in the summer months (said no one ever). Make like Alicia Vikander at the Met Ball and wear with something sporty for an off-kilter cool.

These are Americana rodeo chic in a boot and we're sure you'll agree. Perfect with frayed denim and floral dresses.

They're a classic for a reason. Forget wellies for festivals and get back into some DMs.

We're into the contrast heel on these sharp-toed boots.

So 70s it hurts. Ideal fodder for spicing up a playsuit.

Howdy! We're quite sure this is what Cher might look like as a shoe and we're into it. Pretty sure these will look even better a bit battered. Bonus.

This black bootie will look excellent with a heavy dernier come December but for now we'll be wearing with shorts.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
