It's time to get a crush on Christina Curry . Meet the anime-enthiusiast and self-described anti-socialite who is the daughter of former Playboy Bunny Patricia Paay and Adam Curry, founder of the 'podcast'. Curry has lived in London, LA and all over Europe and currently calls Rotterdam home. Chrissie has been a presenter and Dutch TV personality but right now, she's focusing on her career as a writer, model and in her own words being a "general fantastic exhibitionist feminist creep that works in an organic store to fund my current business ventures."
That business venture is the feminist brand she's launching with her friend Anna called Fire Femme, derived from the slang expression "that's fire fam". The label, which will produce unisex tees and skate-style socks is all about celebrating women's strength and sexuality. Chrissie promises that the T-shirts, and the spring launch party that the duo are throwing are small stepping stones towards commandeering a new girl's movement in Holland. Watch. This. Space.
Name, age, location:
Christina Curry, 25, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Occupation:
TV personality/ writer/ model (for the lolz I’m short and of a normal size)/professional nerd/ anti-socialite
If you were an item of clothing what would you be and why?
I would be a tartan skirt. It’s kind of slutty but also really cute and kawaii- like anime-ish. I love anime.
Favorite item of clothing you’re currently wearing?
I pretty much live in my stacked-sole cherry red Dr Martens. I’m kind of short, so I like that they make me taller. Wait does that mean I have small man syndrome? I think I do….small-man-height-liar syndrome.
What item of clothing sums you up best?
More like an outfit I think: high-waisted jeans and a t-shirt without a bra. It’s sporty, tomboyish, but I guess still kind of sexy.
If you had to wear one designer for the rest of your life, who would it be?
Vivienne Westwood, 100%. I love the timeless British punk style. Also she feeds my tartan obsession. I could wear tartan every day of the week. Also I used to live in Clapham and would see her biking in my neighborhood. Viv gives me life, that saucy little orange-haired minx!
What do you love about the city you live in?
I love Rotterdam because it’s fucking beautiful and worldly. It’s not as ‘popular’ as Amsterdam, but it’s almost better because of that. Most of Rotterdam was bombed in the Second World War, so a lot of the architecture is extremely new and modern. We even have an actual skyline! The people here are fashionable without trying, dry without being pretentious douchebags, and there’s always plenty going on here. It’s a very artistic city. I get emotional every time I’m standing outside of Rotterdam Central Station.
How does it impact your style?
I’ve definitely gotten more casual and laid back with my style here, but also more creative because you don’t have the peacocking thing that goes on. You could go out in sweatpants, a leather jacket, and red lipstick and people would still think you look cool because anything goes. There’s such a mix of style going on over here.
Where’s your favourite place to shop:
I’m a clothing hoarder. I have items in my closet that I found in vintage and charity shops from when I lived in London and LA. I also went through an “emotional shopping” phase where I bought a bunch of things and never even took the tag off (awkward side glance….). So honestly every day I kind of shop in my own closet haha. I love combining vintage with high street stores. It’s like a game trying to style out an H&M buy with other pieces so that no one even recognises where you bought it from.
What item of clothing are you still hunting out?
I’m trying to find the perfect pair of Levi’s denim shorts that fit my small waist, wide hips, yet cover my large butt so that mothers on the street don’t cover their children’s eyes in absolute horror and disapproval. I have a really awkward long-legged/short upper body thing going on too!
How would you sum your style up in three words?
Sexy/Sporty/Punk
What’s your most important beauty rule?
To remain single always so you can sleep in an obscene layer of sudocreme without being judged. Also don’t eat dairy. It’s booboo and gives you bad skin.
Favourite make-up product and why?
Ruby Woo lipstick from MAC . It’s timeless and the only red I really like, because it’s perfect and matte. The words “shiny” or “glossy” combined - no.
Weirdest beauty trick you’ve every tried?
Honestly, just when my roommate contoured my face with her, takes deep breath... Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit. She countered my face like those YouTube chicks do. I looked like a round-headed Kim Kardashian alien thing…
Who do you stalk on Instagram?
I was stalking my roommate @FloatingCoffee for a while before I got her to meet me offline (I guess people need to make sure you’re not a creepy old man first) and we became best friends/roomies. I heavily stalk @foxillaa she’s such a babe. She has the long graceful neck I’ll never have. Oh and @sokothecat . I guess you could call me a big ol’ lesbian stalker.
What’s your favourite picture you’ve posted?
The picture my friend @NaikopuntNL took of me and my roommate @FloatingCoffee standing by my fridge eating in our underwear. I love the colours and the fact that I somehow blagged having my complete titties WITH nipple out through a complete see through mesh shirt. It also blew up on the Instagram “discover” page thing. People and blogs from all over were showing it love.
Your favourite place to eat?
FUCK THAT’S SO HARD STOP IT. Probably this amazing vegan restaurant I ate at last year when I was visiting friends in London – 222 Veggie Vegan in West Kensington . The pumpkin pine nut risotto is the closest thing to love-making I’ve ever experienced.
What’s your favourite thing to cook?
I love cooking Thai curries, with sweet potato. I make things ridiculously spicy though – I have satan’s tastebuds. I’m basically allergic to dairy and gluten so honestly if you’re going to ask me what my favourite food is it’s probably just apple and peanut butter – for myself. But I’ll cook you that curry thing if I have a crush on you or want to mother you.
Where’s your happy place?
My home with all my books, movies, comics, and action figures <3 just leave me to die there.
Your biggest fear?
It’s a toss-up between throwing up and dying alone. I have a huge phobia of puking. But I’m also scared I’ll become so good at being a loner that I’ll never meet someone to grow old with. Or meet someone that can stand my quirks in general really. This is why I have sad girl tattooed on my hands – listen to that. It sounds like a Smiths song up in here.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
That’s a really tough question for me, because when I look at the life I’ve had so far I’ve “achieved” loads I guess – but it never feels good enough. I think I’m about to have my greatest achievement. Anna (@floatingcoffee ) and I are about to launch our own brand. I haven’t been this excited or sure about something in a while. We should be launching in the next two weeks – so keep your eyes peeled for that!
Where are we most likely to find you on a Friday night/Sunday morning?
Friday night you’ll probably find me pushing boys around in a club because I’ve drunk too much whisky/tequila and think I’m a 5’6” hulk, and on a Sunday probably locked away in my room alone watching anime with the curtains closed. I’m kind of a nerdy loner. But when I’m social, I think I overdo it, ha!
What do you want from your career?
Honestly, I don’t care what turn my life takes, as long as I’m doing things that don’t feel like a “job”. And by job I mean something tiresome, totally disinteresting to me, and under the command of someone else. When you make something you love doing into your career, with people that inspire you and keep you motivated – that’s the goal right there. I don’t want to be popular for the sake of being popular on the internet and just existing. Anna and I are about to create a feminist wave in Holland, because it’s seriously lacking one over here. We want to inspire young women to be strong, and fuck off all of societies standards.
Where will you be in 10 years
Let’s see…in 10 years I’ll be turning 36. So hopefully I’ll have accomplished my career goals above. I’d like to be living in London again with a cool husband/wife and be playing video games (playstation 7? 8?) with my future children. I guess I just see myself being happy and still having fun in 10 years.
Who’s your best buddy?
My dad. He’s a big ol’ nerd like me. We’re really alike and I love that he understands how my brains work – no one else seems to!
Who makes you laugh?
My two best friends Amanda and Anna. We’re all kind of guys girls so we have the nastiest humour together. Plus I’ve never met two girls that could pull more disgusting face than them. Horrible. Really gives me nightmares.
What’s next?
The brand launch! We’re filming the trailer this Friday and I’m so excited to be able to put more info out soon! I also hope to start writing some more again. What else am I going to do with my sarcastic/cynical tone and sinister personality disorder??
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
