How is it May already? Hmm, maybe it feels like it rolled around fast because we spent most of April in the cinema. And intend to do the same until at least June. So, here's a cursory run down of everything that's coming out over the next month film-wise.
My date top tip is Everybody Wants Some!! My bank-holiday-Monday-feeling-like-you-want-to-cry top cheer up tip is the latest X-Men . My film to see if you wanna show off down the pub is Terrence Malick's new epic Knight Of Cups . And there's a bunch more good stuff for all of the occasions in between, handily summarised ahead.
Enjoy!
Bad Neighbours 2 - 6th of May
If the trailer is anything to go by, it doesn't seem highly important for you to have seen Bad Neighbours 1 to enjoy Bad Neighbours 2 . It has slapstick comedy, a shirtless Zac Effron and was produced by and stars Seth Rogen. All key elements for a mindless but enjoyable watch.
Florence Foster Jenkins – 6th of May
After playing a rock star mom in Ricki and the Flash , Meryl Streep has turned her acting talents to quite a different role – that of a New York heiress who tried to become an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. A story about a rich person buying their way into a profession might irk some people, but Streep no doubt plays a likeable Jenkins, with Hugh Grant ever chipper in a supporting role. Directed by Stephen Frears – the man behind Dangerous Liaisons , The Queen , Philomena , and other films your mum likes.
Knight Of Cups – 6th of May
Terrence Malick once again meditates on The Meaning Of Life, only this time with sex, drugs and Christian Bale. The director behind Badlands and Days of Heaven – two of the best films ever made – always gets our vote when it comes to what to see at the cinema. However, his more recent films Tree of Life and To The Wonder were disappointing, so we wonder how this one will measure up. Also starring Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Imogen Poots and Freida Pinto as Bale's various love interests, lucky man.
No idea what the name "Knight of Cups" is about, sorry.
I Saw The Light – 6th of May
When will we reach peak Tom Hiddleston? I worry that we never will. That he will be in everything forever. And we will never know another leading man again. Anyway, here he is playing American country music star Hank Williams. His accent sounds a lot like Matthew McConaughey... just sayin'.
The Angry Birds Movie – 13th of May
What could be more annoying than the Angry Birds game? The Angry Birds movie of course! Listen, if you're less cynical than me, and/or have kids, you may want to watch these irate CGI animals winding each other up. For over an hour.
Everybody Wants Some!! – 13th of May
If you're a fan of Richard Linklater's iconic movie Dazed and Confused , then brace yourself for this bad boy, set in 1980s Texas. It's the indie auteur take on the frat house genre we've all been waiting for!
Our Kind of Traitor – 13th of May
Everyone's gone rightfully batshit for John le Carré scripts recently. The Night Manager blew up our TV screens, and now, Our Kind Of Traitor , based on the British author's 22nd novel (Yes, he writes a lot of books), is due to hit cinemas. Set in amongst the Russian mafia, the story follows some MI6 agents trying to catch out a money launderer. It's typical crime thriller stuff, but with a classic le Carré twist at the end. Starring Ewan McGregor, Naomi Harris and Damian Lewis.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – 13th of May
Release date moved forward from last month, this looks a lot like "Liz Lemon goes to Afghanistan" and we're into it. Okay, so it's hard to accept that this somewhat screwball comedy is based on "A True Story" because it's doubtful that any female journalist as ditzy as this character would be sent to a war zone with no prior reporting experience beyond a desk job. And besides, we're bored of seeing ditzy women struggling in typically masculine situations. Having said that, we can probably give this the benefit of the doubt because it's Tina Fey... and everything Tina Fey does is right and good.
X-Men: Apocalypse – 18th May
While we might have lost count of how many X-Men films there have been, the good news is you can't really get bored of them; for a blockbuster franchise, the political underpinnings always run deep. This one has Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy in it, too. Dope, probably.
Heart of a Dog – 20th of May
Laurie Anderson is an American violinist, performance artist and poet. This is a film she made about her dog. It's also a little bit about the death of her husband, Lou Reed of Velvet Underground fame. It's quite niche, then. But sure to be moving.
Alice Through The Looking Glass – 27th of May
If the trailer is anything to go by, taking your child to see this film would not be dissimilar to giving them LSD. It's visually mind boggling, the story strange, the characters slightly creepy – and you'd expect nothing less from director Tim Burton. It's been almost six years since Australian actress Mia Wasikowska stepped into Alice's shoes in the first movie, and now she's back – with Johnny Depp alongside her – for the sequel.
Love & Friendship – 27th of May
Chloe Sevigny rocking up in this British period drama starring Kate Beckinsale and Stephen Fry is one of the most jarring things I've ever seen. U ok hun?
Money Monster – 27th of May
Julia Roberts, I love you. I loved you in Notting Hill . I loved you in Erin Brockovich . Hell, I even loved you in Eat, Pray, Love . It is nice to see you alongside George Clooney again, albeit in an high-tension, hostage drama. Money Monster tells the story of a failed investor (Jack O'Connell) strapping a bomb to a Wall Street investment guru (George Clooney) on live television. Roberts, the TV shows producer, must get him out alive. Directed expertly by Jodie Foster.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
