Bored of Slade and Mariah? Why not try out Refinery29 UK's Christmas indie playlist! Warning: bands in skinny jeans find Christmas very, very depressing.
Julian Casablancas - "I Wish It Was Christmas Today"
Originally a Saturday Night Live skit, perhaps the notoriously dour Strokes frontman does have a sense of humour after all. Anyway, this is one of the only new contributions to the Christmas song canon since Mariah.
Sufjan Stevens - "O Come, O Come Emmanuel"
For someone so miserable, Sufjan sure loves Christmas; he made a whole album about it, 2006's Songs For Christmas. Fear not, though, this is still as depressing as that John Lewis ad.
The Walkmen - "The Christmas Party"
We all get a little reflective at Christmas time, so we can all relate to sitting with "a belly full of wine" and thinking of the one that got away.
Death Cab For Cutie - "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"
Rolling Stone placed Darlene Love's original version of this song number one in The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs Of All Time but for these purposes – the purposes being indie – we've gone with Death Cab For Cutie's reimagining.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "All I Want For Christmas"
Don't confuse this with the Mariah song; this is an original track that YYYs released back in 2008. It's a winner.
The XX - "Last Christmas"
Recorded in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, and in true XX style, turn Wham!'s kitsch hit into a sombre whine-a-thon.
Bright Eyes - "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"
Obv Bright Eyes, crown prince of heartbreak and sadness, turns this sweet ditty into a song of sorrow. He's wishing someone a happy Christmas through gritted teeth and tears.
Phoenix - "Alone On Christmas Day"
Released this year as part of Bill Murray's A Very Murray Christmas, the man himself intros the depressing track. Christ, what is it with Christmas and indie? Do none of them have a good time on December 25th? It's not that depressing.
Low - "Just Like Christmas"
Fun indie fact: Low were one of the first ever indie bands to do Christmas tracks (this is taken from their 1999 album Christmas ) so you have them to blame for all these depressing reimaginings.
Arcade Fire - "Jinglebell Rock"
Woh there, how many eggnogs had Arcade Fire downed before they recorded this? They sound pissed as lords. Sure enough, it turns out they laid down this track at a house party.
Peace - "Last Christmas"
Birmingham's finest don some pretty appalling festive jumpers and inject some swagger into Wham!'s classic hit. Worth watching for Harry and Dom's shared booth vocals alone.
Palma Violets - "Last Christmas On Planet Earth"
New for this year! Are Palma Violets the one indie band who actually like Christmas? Not only is this tune pretty upbeat but they released it as part of an advent calendar of treats on the website this December.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
